Pyongyang Bell
The Pyongyang Bell is hung in the bell house in Taedongmun-dong, Central District, Pyongyang.
A historical record says that it was moved from the loft of the Taedong Gate when northern wall had been built in Pyongyang with a northern commanding post in 1714.
The present Pyongyang Bell was cast in the western yard of the Pubyok Pavilion from June to September 1726.
It weighs 12t 914kg, 3.1 meter high and 1.6 meter wide in the diameter of its mouth.
Carved on the surface of the bell are the images of Buddha, the Four Devas, cloud patterns and name of the bell.
The hook is an ornamental twin dragons with a vivid presentation of their heads.
The newly cast bell was hung in a bell house in front of the then public inn Taedonggwan. The present bell house was rebuilt in 1827.
It was a long old routine to have the bell rung in the morning (rang 33 times at 04:00) to open the wall gates and evening hour (rang 28 times at 22:00) to close them at the same time or to the events happening within the wall.
One of leading big bells of the feudal Joson dynasty, the Pyongyang Bell was known as an attraction of Pyongyang for its beautiful shape and solemn sound.
It is one of the cultural relics showing well the features of the Korean bell and the high level of casting technique.
President Kim Il Sung made an inquiry on December 31, 1945 whether the bell still was able to make a sound. He said to this effect: The bell had been an important means of signal our forefathers used for repelling the foreign invaders. This precious cultural asset too, had been locked up and could not make its own melody after the Japanese occupation, but now that the country was freed, it sure has to make its own sound.
The sound of the Pyongyang Bell echoed over the land with the love of President Kim Il Sung at midnight on the eve of the 1946 New Year’s Day. Its solemn and gentle sound gave our people great pleasure in the first morning after the liberation.
The Pyongyang Bell is still preserved as original, conveying the love for people of President Kim Il Sung .
