77 Years for Saving Lives and Promoting Welfare of the People

During the past 77 years, the Red Cross Society of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK RCS) has continuously given efforts to fulfill its mission of saving lives and promoting welfare of the people.

Taking account of the post liberation healthcare situation of the country which was extremely degraded due to the Japanese colonial rule, President Kim Il Sung convened a consultative meeting of the officials concerned in April, Juche 35(1946), and in the meeting a resolution was adopted to set up the Association for Public Health and Red Cross Society as a health and disaster relief organization.

With presence of President Kim Il Sung, there was held the 49^th session of the Presidium of the Provisional People’s Committee of North Korea on October 18, Juche 35(1946), in which it was made public the foundation of North Korea Red Cross Society (NK RCS) by its Decree No.100.

After the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPR Korea) was founded on September 9, Juche 37(1948), the North Korea Red Cross Society was renamed as the Red Cross Society of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on December 9, Juche 37(1948).

The DPRK RCS has promoted hygiene propaganda activity and training, first aid service in disasters among population, cooperation with public health establishments in prevention of communicable disease and other kinds and dissemination of the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and International Humanitarian Law.

The DPRK RCS has continuously improved its organizational structure and working methods in keeping with the assigned tasks and practical requirements at different stages and made persistent efforts to enhance its capacity and has made active contributions to the mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of the world by promoting the cooperation with IFRC, ICRC and other sister Societies.

As a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the DPRK RCS will faithfully accomplish its mission of saving lives and promoting welfare of the people based on the Fundamental Principles of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
