On Global Handwashing Day

Many people suffer from various communicable diseases and even lose their lives every year mostly because of infection through hands.

Normally 60 percent of all communicable diseases are transmitted by hands.

The bacteria and virus on the human hand are active for a long time and we should wash our hands frequently enough to prevent hand-transmitted diseases.

Given the importance of hand-washing, the UN designated October 15 as the Global Handwashing Day, commemorating the occasion every year since 2008.

What is important is to wash hands with soap.

Simple handwashing with soap alone can reduce the diarrhea by 50 percent and respiratory infections like pneumonia by almost 25 percent among children under five.

The importance of washing and disinfection of hands is highlighted further in relation to containing such communicable diseases that seriously threaten the human race.

On the Global Handwashing Day, the RC volunteers have conducted IEC (Information, Education and Communication) activities in different parts of the country for raising the public awareness and for preventing infectious diseases through hand-washing practices.
