Red Cross Society of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea
October 18th is the foundation day of the Red Cross Society of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK RCS.)
It was founded in 1946 on the first-hand initiative of President
Kim Il Sung .Its mission is to prevent or alleviate misfortunes and sufferings of all people, promote their health and well-being, as well as to contribute to the global peace and well-being of the humankind by strengthening friendship and unity, solidarity and cooperation with peoples of other countries.
After its foundation, it has successfully fulfilled its auxiliary role to the government in the humanitarian activities as an independent public health and relief organization which was established by the people’s voluntary will, and has now developed into a strong organization with more than 600,000 members, more than 100,000 volunteers and approximately 250,000 RC youth members.
With strong emphasis on its traditional activities of first-aid training and service, the society has briskly conducted activities like the community-based health and first-aid (CBHFA) services, disaster prevention, WASH (water sanitation and hygiene) activities, etc., thus contributing substantially to protecting the lives and promoting health of the people.
Besides, the society has rendered active support to the implementation of people-oriented policies of the State aimed at improving people’s livelihood and well-being like alleviating the inconvenience of persons with physical disabilities and provide them with life conveniences and consolidating the material foundations of schools for children with visual impairment, etc.
The DPRK RCS will continue to make every effort to prevent and alleviate misfortunes and sufferings of all people and promote their health and well-being by thoroughly embodying the people-first principle in all its activities, befitting its mission as an auxiliary organization to the government of the Republic striving for people’s welfare.
