Water Clock and Sundial

Water clock is a device for measuring the hour by the amount of water flowing down from an aperture made beneath a vessel.
It is known to have been used from B.C., the oldest of its kind in the world.
It was first made during the Three Kingdoms Period.
The historical records Samguksagi (Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms) goes that there was even a government-run office for managing the water clock, but no relic remained.
An automatic water clock was made from the time of King Sejong (1419-1450) of the feudal Joson dynasty.
A typical example is Jagyokru made by Jang Yong Sil and others in 1434. This device was installed at the Poru pavilion to the south of Kyonghoe house.
In 1536, past a century, this water clock was improved and installed in the same place.
Jang Yong Sil and the other technician, made another water clock Okru in 1437 to install in Humgyong pavilion in the east of Kyonghoe house.
Those show well the wisdom of the Korean nation, which made a precise manual process of many parts to assemble a complex device of clock to activate it normally.
The sundial measures hours by the shade of the sun. At the time, it was called ilgu.
The typical one is the Angbuilgu.
This clock has a pole as a guide on a semi-globular bottom to get a shade by the sun, which indicates the hour and season.
The one on display in the Korean Central History Museum was made after the 18th century. There are many other relics of sundials.
