Jongdok Temple, Historical Relic of Mt. Paektu

Jongdok Temple is one of the many historical relics in Mt. Paektu evidencing the Korean people’s great worship of Mt. Paektu.
The temple had been erected by the Korean people in 1906 near Talmun at the tip of the shore of the Lake Chon.
At present, there is no building left, but a site.
Many books including the “Records on Climbing of Mt. Paektu” published in 1931 compiled the photograph of the Jongdok Temple and records on it.
The buildings of the temple were all wooden structures with 99 rooms. In the middle of the main buildings was an inner hall, round which were the rooms disposed in the treble octagonal form in a way of doubling in such a way as 8 rooms, 16 rooms and 32 rooms.
There were the calligraphic hanging boards of “Jongdok Temple” each on the southern and western fronts. Another boards of “Hochongumguolsangjejon” and “Taewon Pavilion” in the eastern side and a board of “Paektusan Taethaeksu Jongdok Temple” on the northern side.
In the inner hall was hung a memorial tablet of “Lord of Heaven Chonbulwi”.
The “Hochongumguolsangjejon” is meant by a palace of the Lord of Heaven, that the Lake Chon is permeated with the spirit of the Lord of Heaven.
Written in the tablet is the name of the ancestor.
The “Lord of Heaven Chonbulwi” implies that the place was a temple for offering prayers to the Lord of Heaven.
The Jongdok Temple was slowly destroyed for the lack of proper preservation and maintenance caused by the harsh suppression and disturbance of the Japanese imperialists for killing the spirit of the Korean nation before the liberation.
