Japanese Past Crime of Destruction and Plunder
of Korean Cultural Assets (28)

The Japanese plunderers took also many stoneworks the Korean people created in a long historical period including pagodas, monuments, stupas and stone lanterns.
The pagodas began to appear from the latter half of the 4th century together with the Buddhist temples as one of central architectures.
They are valuable heritages, which show the aspects of the then development of architecture together with the temple architecture in the period of Three Kingdoms.
Many Buddhist cultural heritages including the pagodas, displaying the distinctions of the Korean nation, were spoiled and plundered by the Japanese sordid and bestial atrocities.
In December 1906 the early period of their Korea occupation a man called Tanaka plundered in broad daylight the ten-story marble pagoda, one of the most excellent stone pagodas during the Koryo dynasty.
As in the plunder of other cultural assets, the colonial chieftains stood in the van in the plunder of the stone pagodas. Sone Araske a "governor-general" in 1909 depredated the 5-storied marble pagoda from a cave temple.
The Japanese philistines modeled after their chieftains to vie to the plunder of the stone pagodas competitively.
Okura a notorious plunderer of the Korean cultural assets robbed of an octagonal 5-storied pagoda from Pyongyang and shipped many other stone pagodas to Japan.
One of the facts that many Korean stone pagodas were displayed in an antique shop in Japan in 1930s is an eloquent evidence on the Japanese spoilage of Korean cultural assets.
