 King Kwanggaetho

King of Koguryo dynasty Kwanggaetho (374-412) ruled 22 years (391-412). His name is Tamdok, 17th grandson of King Tongmyong.
He was appointed to a crown prince in 386. After enthronement in 391, he pushed forward with vigour the policy of southern expansion Koguryo had been carrying on.
He defeated the Paekje forces by sea route in 391 to repel Japan which was invading Koguryo in league with Paekje and Kaya and took over ten walls by engaging in several battles between 392 and 385.
In 396 he attacked Paekje through land and water to close in upon its capital to bring the king of Paekje to his knees.
In 392 he subordinated Silla dynasty as a junior partner and in 400 crushed the forces of Paekje, Kaya and Japan to give them a fatal blow.
In 404 he gave a heavy blow to the Japanese forces and in 407 gave Paekje another defeat.
From 391 to 395 he punished the Piryobu of the Kitan which threatened the northwestern boundary to obedience and attacked later Yan to frustrate its aggressive attempt to invade Koguryo and in 407 improved the relations with northern Yan.
In 410 he attacked eastern Puyo to take 1400 villages in 63 provinces to bring them to submission.
With the result, he made Koguryo the most powerful country during his rule.
In his internal policy, too, he built 9 Buddhist temples in Pyongyang in 393 and pushed ahead the construction of the Pyongyang Wall.
King Kwanggaetho made a great contribution to increasing its power by expanding the territory of Koguryo and progressing the cause of uniting the three countries.
