Special Products of Palhae Known in the World

Among the cultural heritages showing the wisdom and talent of the Korean nation there are also the material and cultural properties created by the Palhae people.
Palhae not only presented its pride as Haedongsongguk (Prosperous country in the East) for its development in political and military aspects as well as in its economy and culture but also was widely known to the world for its special products from early date.
Above all, it was famous with copper. A historical record goes that a superior officer of Tang, China, implored in 836 the King of his country to withdraw the ban of import of Sukdong (quality copper well refined) from Palhae, which testifies the fame and high demand of Palhae’s copper.
The product made of furs was famous in particular in Palhae. Palhae exported a great deal of fur pieces of weasels, tigers, panthers, bears and white rabbits even to far-away Soyok (mainly those surrounding countries in Central Asia and West Asia) not to mention Tang and Japan, and these products won a high popularity and demand.
In May 871, a Japanese official praised highly the weasel fur coat, musk and black fur shoes of Palhae as “rare foreign goods” in his letter of appreciation to Palhae’s envoy Yang Song Gyu in honour of the king of his country.
Prevalent at the time among the Japanese aristocrats was the tendency of respecting the fur products from Palhae.
Porcelains, gem stones and their products and quality stone goods etc. from Palhae were also famous.
The porcelain of Palhae was multifarious in its kind, size, shape, colour, base mud and pattern and had a good combination of utility and artistic value.
A historical record of Tang goes that a purple-coloured earthenware tub (Jajabun) imported from Palhae in 841 was “as large as 2.5 bushel in size with lucent purple-coloured interior and as light as a feather in spite of its thickness of over an inch,” a good reminder of its dexterity and beauty.
Among the special products of Palhae there were many toys. One of Japanese officials saw Jinwan (gemstone toy) brought by the entourage of the Palhae envoy in 876 and said in admiration “I have never seen such a delicate toy though I have seen many rare treasures in Tang.”
