Japanese Past Crime of Destruction and Plunder
of Korean Cultural Assets (11)
Many Buddhist fine art pieces belonging to the Koryo time and the early period of the feudal Joson dynasty were pillaged by the Japanese invaders during the Imjin Patriotic War.
The Japanese invaders combed to every corner of the Buddhist temples in the temporarily occupied areas to take many priceless Buddhist fine art pieces. Many of them are still kept in custody in the temples of Japan.
There are the best Buddhist fine art pieces of the feudal Joson dynasty created in the mid-16th century in the Gagamijinjya, Ankokuji of Hukuyama City and Koseiji of Nagoya City. These are a very small part of the pillaged art pieces.
A Japanese noted that many of them had been drained to other countries to alter the origin or perverted to the fine art pieces of a foreign country. Saying “most of the Korean Buddhist fine art pieces before the Imjin Patriotic War stored in Japan were the loot” he revealed that in the world there were scores of Buddhist fine art pieces which had their year and author of creation clarified as having been created during the feudal Joson dynasty, most of which are in Japan and only a few in Korea, the creative country, and the wholesale plunder by invasion made a gap in the development of the Korean history and culture.
