Losing Business Needs to Be Done
A consultative meeting of the officials of the food-processing industrial sector was held in the presence of Chairman Kim Jong Il (1942-2011) one day in April 1979.
In the meeting, he proposed to build a yeast factory in a short span of time and asked their opinion.
However, nobody could answer readily.
It was because many construction projects were underway targeting a completion before the 6th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and so fund was in high demand everywhere.
An official in charge of finance suggested him to delay the construction of a yeast factory because of the strained finance of the country.
Listening to him Chairman Kim Jong Il told that it needs to be calculated before beginning a project, yet there is an exception. Then he continued as follows:
All of you think of your mothers. Our mothers would clothe their children with their only clothing when no cloth was available and feed their children by selling their braids of hair when short of rice. Only when you have this motherly love knowing no calculation can you do one more good thing for the people. People often say to evade any losing business, but we need to do some losing business if it were for the sake of the people. We have to be lavish in spending the national fund if only it improves the people’s livelihood. I advise you to refrain from preceding calculation if it is in the interests of the people. It is my way of calculation and that of the WPK….
